Fabulous short break

This is our third stay at la Pergola and was a lovely short break before the Easter rush. We upgraded to half board before we travelled and feel we got value for money. The hotel is very clean and the staff very friendly…

Wonderful

We stayed here whilst walking the GR221 for a little bit of luxury and that is exactly what we got. Watching the sunset made it extra special.

Nit de Ses Ánimes: Discover Mallorcan Traditions

Nit de Ses Ánimes: Discover Mallorcan Traditions

La Nit de Ses Ànimes and Tots Sants are two celebrations deeply rooted in Mallorcan culture, marking a period of reflection, remembrance, and connection with ancestors. These traditions, celebrated on October 31st and November 1st respectively, blend elements of local folklore with religious devotion, creating a rich tapestry of symbolism and unique rituals.

La Nit de Ses Ànimes and its Mallorcan Tradition

La Nit de Ses Ànimes, also known as the Night of Souls, is the eve of All Saints' Day. According to popular belief, on this night, the souls of the departed return to the world of living to visit their loved ones. This belief has given rise to a series of customs and rituals aimed at honoring and remembering those who have passed.

One of the most iconic traditions of La Nit de Ses Ànimes is leaving a light on and setting the table with bread and water. It is believed that this helps guide the souls of the departed and provides sustenance for their journey. In some areas of the island, especially in inland villages, the tradition of placing oil lamps in windows persists, creating a mysterious and evocative atmosphere in the dark streets.

Another traditional practice is the preparation of panellets, small sweets made from ground almonds, sugar, and eggs, often covered with pine nuts. These sweets, also found in other regions, are shared among family and friends as a symbol of unity and remembrance of deceased loved ones. Panellets are a hallmark of Mallorcan pastry culture.

Tots Sants, According to Mallorcan Tradition

With the arrival of Tots Sants on November 1st, the atmosphere shifts from the mysterious to the solemn. This day is dedicated to honoring all saints and, by extension, all the departed. It is a day of reflection and devotion when Mallorcan families gather to remember their deceased loved ones.

The most prominent tradition of Tots Sants is visiting cemeteries. Families come together to clean and decorate the graves of their ancestors with flowers, especially chrysanthemums, which are traditionally associated with this celebration. Cemeteries are transformed into vibrant gardens, full of color and life, a beautiful contrast to their usual austerity.

In many Mallorcan villages, special masses are held in honor of the deceased, both in churches and cemeteries. These ceremonies are often well-attended and provide an opportunity for the community to gather in a collective act of remembrance.

Gastronomy also plays a significant role in Tots Sants. In addition to the panellets, it is customary to enjoy rosaris ensucrats, sweets shaped like rosaries made from marzipan and dried fruits. These treats are not only a delight but also carry symbolic meaning, representing the connection between the earth and the spiritual.

In recent years, the influence of Halloween has been noticeable in Mallorcan celebrations, especially among younger generations. However, local traditions of La Nit de Ses Ànimes and Tots Sants remain strong, adapting to modern times while preserving their essence.
